Why Is Paul Ryan So Adamant About His Refusal to Run?

There’s no doubt that the GOP is having some technical difficulties in this election, and it’s causing more than just a passing concern for some. Many feel that Paul Ryan may just be the person to unify the Republican party right now, given the divide. To their dismay, Paul Ryan has made it fairly clear that he can’t imagine taking on the challenge right now. On the face of it, he’s maintained the same position for every request. Could this be a smokescreen though? Could he possibly be willing to overturn his own refusal? Let’s look at the facts.

First of all, there are concrete reasons why he wouldn’t want to be the President. Maybe he feels the climate is just too disorganized to get anything done. The chasm between the two schools of thought in Congress right now is so great that it’s led to petty squabbles on both sides of the fence. Of course, the Speaker is well-versed by now of the problems, so that may not be the best defense. Maybe he thinks he’ll do more good in bringing people together in his current role. Or perhaps the Speaker doth protest too much.

Here are two quotes from Mr. Ryan in the past year:

“While I am grateful for the encouragement I’ve received, I will not be a candidate.”

“I’m not thinking about it. I’m happy where I am, so no.”

If you think these are both about the Presidential race, then you would be mistaken. The first quote is Mr. Ryan’s refusal to run for the Speaker of the House, and the second is about the 2016 election.

He’s stated that he hasn’t thought about running, but even that seems like an odd statement. How could he not have given the matter any thought when it’s constantly in his face? He stands in staunch opposition to Trump in matters like immigration and free trade, so he must understand the struggles of championing his own party’s President while still trying to push his own agenda through. This election year is so important for Republicans to keep conservative values alive, and he knows that it’s going to take a lot of work to make that happen.

Taking responsibility for one’s own actions is really the only thing that matters in this country, and the GOP is going to do everything possible to preserve this idea in the face of a changing America. It seems clear that Mr. Ryan does commit to his position, and he’s passionate about his side of the issues. The American people appreciate his fresh face and well-spoken words, and he made a good impression as a running mate for Mr. Romney. He has plans to attract more people to his party, so it can grow and become a stronger voice of reason. It makes sense that he wouldn’t want to get everyone talking about his running until he’s actually ready to take on the enormity of a campaign, which is why we might be seeing the current statements.

According to one poll chart, Paul Ryan has been able to maintain a favorable rating as the Speaker, which could be considered a miracle considering how most people feel about Congress right now. He’s dipped a little bit in terms of his numbers, but he’s still managed to keep himself in a relatively well regarded place amongst politicians and public alike. It bodes well for what he can do for the GOP party. However you personally feel about his views, he hasn’t inspired the extreme polarizing effect that inevitably leads to wasted time in arguing over controversy when we could be talking about the real matters at hand. He showed grace, modesty and a strong sense of character in 2012. The fact that he didn’t initially want to lead the House and still stepped up shows where his real loyalties lie.

From his past actions, it seems that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the race for the sake of the delegates and the American people. Despite his reservations, it looks as though he puts the needs of his constituents above his own. If he chooses not to get involved, then we have to assume that he truly supports the candidate who is nominated based on their merit and action plans. Whoever that may happen to be, Republicans across the country will be ready to ensure this country stays strong in the midst of turmoil.
