Teachers’ unions remain big Democratic Party donors and rank among the many puppeteers pulling Joe Biden’s strings. Since Dr. Rochelle “Hot Mess” Walensky became the Biden Administration’s director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, science has taken a backseat to politics. After the National Education Association sent a demand letter to the White House, the CDC rewrote its school mask guidelines to comply.
In February, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) brought direct pressure to bear on Walensky, and members of the CDC regarding the language used surrounding school reopening mandates. Dr. Hot Mess literally tapped the brakes on re-opening schools after the teacher lobby was unhappy.
“Thank you again for Friday’s rich discussion about forthcoming CDC guidance and for your openness to the suggestions made by our president, Randi Weingarten, and the AFT,” AFT senior director for health Kelly Trautner wrote in an email obtained through a Freedom of Information filing. “We were able to review a copy of the draft guidance document over the weekend and were able to provide some initial feedback to several staff this morning about possible ways to strengthen the document.”
Walensky was later grilled about her 180-degree turn that suddenly advocated for more disastrous virtual learning. She offered no scientific data to support keeping children out of school.
“What seems strange to me here is there would be this very intimate back and forth including phone calls where this political group gets to help formulate scientific guidance for our major public health organization in the United States,” professor of medicine Dr. Monica Gandhi, Gandhi reportedly said. “This is not how science-based guidelines should work or be put together.”
The National Education Association (NEA) joined the AFT demanding all CDC school guidance meet teacher union officials’ wishes. A recently exposed email chain indicates Dr. Hot Mess was begging the NEA and AFT for approval of Covid-related school guidance. The back-channel dialogue appears to prove the influential teachers’ unions are literally writing segments of guidelines that are supposed to be based purely on scientific data.
“These documents are further evidence that instead of following the science, the White House and the CDC allowed politics to influence policy,” Americans for Public Trust executive director Caitlin Sutherland said.
What may be even more troubling is that teachers union officials are telling Dr. Hot Mess what does and does not constitute science. The email chain highlights that Trautner guided the CDC directives and even asserted the agency would need to issue new guidelines if union members demanded.
“In the event high-community transmission results from a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, a new update of these guidelines may be necessary,” Trautner reportedly wrote. “We don’t believe that any current research has demonstrated that all schools in those areas can safely reopen.”
Since Joe Biden’s handlers inserted Walensky, she has routinely reversed CDC policy when left-wing voting blocs or politicians balked. But perhaps what is most concerning about Dr. Hot Mess acting like a political shill is the fact the corruption appears widespread.
Email threads show CDC communication officials such as Christopher Jones coordinating efforts with the NEA and AFT. However, at no point does the CDC appear to push back against teachers’ unions, who just happen to be major donors to the Democratic Party.
