The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) sent a letter to National Football League (NFL) commissioner Roger Goodell to demand him to cut ties with Fox Sports.
“The NAACP is going after Fox News in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection (on the U.S. Capitol),” ABC’s Beatrice-Elizabeth Peterson tweeted. “The civil rights group is asking the National Football League to reconsider its relationship with the network.”
In the letter, the NAACP argued the NFL should end contracts with Fox over “the messages and tone of the network in inflaming racial division and propagating an unstable political climate.” In other words, the NAACP claims Fox is racists because it is conservative and should therefore not be connected with the NFL.
But the logic doesn’t play out. Conservative does not equal racist, by any means. There are many conservative African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans, in addition to White Americans. Being conservative includes standing for limited government and American values. Being conservative is not equal with racism.
And by the way, African American Fox News host Harris Faulkner’s show is one of the most popular programs on the network.
But the NAACP doesn’t seem to care. Nor does the organization seem to care 70 percent of NFL players are African American and their contracts rely heavily on income from Fox Sports programming. The effort would more likely hurt African Americans in the NFL more than help if its wish was granted.
The NFL is discovering you can never be woke enough for the left. Despite supporting BLM, kneeling during the National Anthem and other progressive practices, the NAACP refuses to offer any encouragement. Instead, the organization seeks to cut ties with the nation’s most watched news network and one of the main national media organizations in the country because it allegedly supports systemic racism.
How about we get back to freedom of speech and freedom of press that allow people and networks the ability to share their views regardless of whether everyone agrees? Instead of adding to cancel culture, can we just cancel the cancel culture?
Remember when the NFL was just about playing football? Me, too. I miss those days. Now it may be not be for long if the NAACP gets its way. Maybe we’ll have to resort to the pandemic days of the National Cornhole League or reruns of past sporting events.
The good news is that the same day the NAACP sent its hostile demands to the NFL, the league announced it had signed new agreements with Fox and other networks through the 2033 season worth $110 billion. Progressives may try to shame Americans against Fox, but it’s simply not good business. The NFL and Fox need one another, especially when stadiums are still under COVID-19 restrictions.
The NFL is also an area where fans ultimately make the call. Most fans enjoy football on the networks where they currently air. The NAACP may not like it, but Americans of all backgrounds join together on Sundays for one of the most united diverse settings in our nation in front of a television with Fox airing NFL football.

I also quit watching NFL games after 40 years of loyal football watching enjoyment. That devotion to being a fan of NFL games ended with Super Bowl of 2016 and haven’t watched a game since. As a military veteran who wore the uniform of a Naval officer during the Vietnam war era, I don’t have any warm thoughts about the likes of Colin Kapernick and his supporters and never will. I’m not alone with my opinion of those who think they have a legitimate reason for denigrating our American flag. Millions of American citizens gave their lives over many years, and that included citizens of all races. The NFL can watch their slow destruction from their own faulty political viewpoint if they wish but they are on the wrong side of the aisle. I frankly realized I don’t miss watching that weekly display of atheletic sports ability. The players will lose the battle for devoted football fans in the long run when they continue to play their only card: the “victim card”, a role designed to destroy them.

Thank you for your service. I too am a veteran of the Vietnam era. Everything you stated is so very true and I agree with you 100%. I too stopped watching when the kneeling started. The ignorance of some of these so called political activists only in up hurting themselves as well as the people they supposedly are trying to assist. Look at the percentage of blacks who play on these leagues,(probably about 85%) so who would they be hurting by trying to force the NFL to cut ties with Fox, oh yes, their victims. Our Country is truly at a cross roads and I don’t think it will be long before we must decide which road to take and I for one know which direction I will go.

We gave up watching pro-sports several years ago when professional athletes refused to honor the country that has provided them with million-dollar-jobs. They are disrespectful and ungrateful. They have totally forgotten or never learned that there are many reasons why we STAND for the national anthem and our flag.
